Loimaa Museum of Art
"Deep in the Future"
The Virtual Loimaa Museum of Art is comprised of several separate elements. The basis and starting point date back to 2005, the year when Loimaa Town and Loimaa Municipality united. Art collections of both had about 400 works, including paintings by Alpo Jaakola, Uuno Soldan and Urho Ahonurho.
The second element comprises the exhibition premises of Art Tyynelä, in Loimaa town centre, and Alpo Jaakola Statuary Park located in the village of Karhula a few kilometres from the town centre in the direction of Turku.
The third element comprises those collections which have come into the care or management of Loimaa Town. The most important ones of these are Eino and Meeri Haapanen’s collection of about 150 Finnish and foreign pieces of art donated by will to Loimaa Town, and Elias Hollo’s photo collection of about 500 photographs from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1960’s. Physically, the Haapanen collection is temporarily located in Helsinki due to lack of decent premises for placement of the works.

Opening of Katja Hannula’s exhibition at the Dryer Gallery, 19 July 2006
The Virtual Loimaa Museum of Art is much more than just a presentation of the town collections: it tells of local tradition, education and the total view of the home town depicted by visual art.

Exeption were summers spent in Karkku near Nokia, wherwe he painted landscapes of lake district, and short travels abroad for instance Germany.
Former exhibition: Urho Ahonurho (1894 - 1952)
Urho Ahonurho lived and worked in Loimaa for most of his life. In the 1920's and 1930's he was quite well-known and highly esteemed, but has later been left in the side of wider recognition.
Ahonurho studied at the Turku Drawing School, and mostly worked in Loimaa. Ahonurho painted in the romantic style: with strong and deep colours. His motifs included nature and - to a lesser extent - man. He also did graphics for commercial purposes, e.g. labels for products of the Loimaa Brewery.
Ahonurho's paintings are featured in collections of the Art Museums of Turku, Tampere and Loimaa. Of the works below, year, technique, size in centimetres and other info are given if available. Click to enlarge the pictures below.
